Mr. Foord in his repert, estimates the damage done to

Track and Rolling Steok at £5,000. This may cover the cart of

røbuilding the two coaches, both of which are entirely wrecked

at any rate as far as the superstructure is osnoerned, and

repairs to the Lece, though it is impossible for the moment te

see how much damage is deme to the latter as it turned ever on

its side and is half embedded in the side of the cutting.

It is evident that no blame for the disaster attaches

to the staff of the Chinese Section but at the same time we are

faced with the possibility of futurs derailment unions

immediate steps are taken to protect the Chinese Bection.

The mesensity for safeguarding the ruming er trains

the thinese Spotion is of vital importance to this section and I

fear that for some time te came traffic receipts will show a

falling off which must be attributed to the lack of confidence

by the travelling public as regards the safety of travelling oz

the fermer Section.

The Chinese Soldiers are useless, and on the scorsien

in question they took the oppertunity to loot anything left by

the rebbers including the feed of the railway coelies engaged

in olgaring the wreckage +

If

it were possible to statisz sene Indian treeps at

sher Lung it would I think go some way to putting an end to the

state of affairs nav prøvailing along the line, and also help

towards restering confidence as to safety in travelling.

The wrecked train was composed eztirely of coaches

belonging to the Chizeno Section.

I attach copies of reports received from the Engineer

in-thief of the shiness Section and the Managing Diapeter,

I have &c.,

(sd.) H. P. Winslow,

Manager.
